Rooted in the Atlantic coastline of Viana do Castelo, Portugal, Boca de Sal is an ongoing artistic research project exploring the biocultural heritage of seaweed harvesting communities.

Developed through long-term fieldwork, collaboration and shared authorship, it brings together artistic practice, scientific knowledge and lived experience to explore the relationships between people, seaweed and the coastal landscape.

At its heart is a living archive that serves as a shared cultural tool. Bringing together photography, video, sound, oral histories, maps, texts, recipes and objects, the archive is designed not only to preserve knowledge, but to activate it through participation, interpretation and dialogue.

Conceived as an open and evolving resource, the archive extends beyond the exhibition space. It invites municipalities, educators, cultural institutions, researchers and local communities to contribute to and activate it through new stories, pedagogical programmes, artistic interventions and community-led initiatives.

More than documenting heritage, Boca de Sal explores the relationships that keep heritage alive.
